Mobile QoS Monitoring. Anytime. Anywhere.

For mobile companies, there is no relationship more delicate than the one with consumers. And making sure that a mobile application is available, usable and correctly formatted at all times is critical to positively maintaining this relationship. However, this process is generally arduous and time-consuming – as well as costly. But with Mobile Complete’s DeviceAnywhere Monitoring™ service, the process can be much easier, faster, cost-efficient and – most importantly – convenient.

General

.: What is a DeviceAnywhere Monitor?

A Monitor is a test or set of tests that automatically executes on a regular basis (e.g. hourly). The tests that are executed are determined by a script, which is a series of instructions including key presses, touch screen taps, image captures, etc., carried out across one or more devices.

.: Why is DeviceAnywhere Monitoring useful?

Your mobile application must be available, usable, and correctly formatted in order to create a positive customer experience and to generate repeat business. DeviceAnywhere Monitoring tests your application from the user’s point of view, so that you can guarantee a quality experience for your customers.

.: What can be monitored? Are there any limits?

Anything that you can do with a device in your hand, you can test with DeviceAnywhere Monitoring. Examples include premium SMS, social networking applications, mobile internet, game or music downloads, video, LBS applications, mobile marketing campaigns, and more. In addition, multi-device scripting is also supported, to support messaging and other networking applications.

.: How many steps can a monitor script include?

There is no limit to the number of steps (interactions with a device) that can be included in a monitor. The only limitation is that the monitor runs within 10 minutes. This allows plenty of time to visit several different websites to validate their content, or to select, download, and even play a game or song, or to send one or more messages between devices. Longer monitors can be accommodated upon request, although are not recommended due to complexity.

.: What type of results are collected through a monitor script?

Customers can collect screen output, timer information (e.g. how long did it take for the web page to download, or the text message to be received), success and failure metrics, and detailed error information.

.: How do I see monitor results?

DeviceAnywhere Monitoring records and reports all results through a flexible reporting interface. Through this interface, users can:

  • Set up “alerts” based on self-defined thresholds, that will automatically be sent via email or text to the specified recipient list
  • View ad hoc reports at any time, choosing the monitors you want to include, the time frame, and the type of report you want to view (timers, success rates, errors)
  • Configure regular reports that will automatically generate and be delivered to your mailbox on the schedule you desire
  • View detailed inputs and outputs, including all device screens generated during the test, to diagnose problems

.: What equipment is needed?

No equipment is required. DeviceAnywhere Monitoring is an on-demand, web-based service that leverages a hardware/software infrastructure deployed and fully managed by Mobile Complete.

.: What handsets will the monitor script run on?

A set of shared DeviceAnywhere Monitoring handsets have been deployed across several markets to support monitor scripts. These handsets include popular consumer models (e.g. Motorola RAZRs, LG Chocolate) as well as smartphones (Motorola Q, Samsung Blackjack, BlackBerry Pearl) across all major US carriers. To view the list of currently available handsets, click here. Don't see the handset you want? You can request a device to be added to the DeviceAnywhere Monitoring shared handset bank.

In addition, for customers who would like their own set of handsets, dedicated just to their scripts, we can set them up for you. In fact, customers can use any combination of shared or dedicated handsets to support their monitoring needs, through DeviceAnywhere Monitoring.

.: What does it cost?

The price of DeviceAnywhere Monitoring depends on the number of monitors, the frequency with which they are run, and the number of handsets utilized. Please view our Pricing page for more details.

Getting Started

.: How do I create a “monitor”?

Our DeviceAnywhere Monitoring customers can either use one of our easy-to-use scripting languages and build scripts themselves, or we can build scripts to your specifications. We have deployed a set of handsets that mirror the production monitoring handset bank, so that any usage while you create scripts will not disrupt running monitors.

.: How do I learn how to write scripts and view reports?

Mobile Complete provides training for each new customer, on using the scripting functionality and the reporting tool. In addition, our support team is always available to answer any questions that you have.

.: How do I start a monitor script running?

Once you have built a monitor script, you must submit it for approval by the DeviceAnywhere Monitoring support team. What we check for is that the script returns the intended result, that it runs on the chosen devices successfully, and that it runs in 10 minutes or less. Within 2 business days, you will receive approval. You may request, upon submitting the script, that we schedule the script for you. Or, once the script has been approved, you can start the script running through the DeviceAnywhere Monitoring scheduling interface. The scheduling interface allows you to specify the market, the specific devices, and frequency slot in which to run the script.

.: Can I stop a monitor script from running?

Yes. From the same scheduling interface noted above, you may stop a monitor at any time. You may also exchange monitors; for instance, you may move one script to another slot, and then schedule a different script to run in the original slot. All that is required is that each script be approved before it is scheduled.

.: How do I get a demo of DeviceAnywhere Monitoring?

Please complete a demo request form and we will get back to you within one business day to demonstrate DeviceAnywhere Monitoring.

Using the Service

.: How long will my results remain in the system?

Your results will remain available to you for as long as you are a customer. We store monitoring results indefinitely.

.: How many scripts can I create?

There is no limit to the number of scripts you can create. Scripts may be created without ever being used within a scheduled monitor.

Pricing FAQ

.: How does pricing work?

There are 3 components of DeviceAnywhere Monitoring pricing:

  • Setup fee. This provides for initial account establishment, training on using the scripting tools and the reporting interface, and the building of one script.
  • Monitor fee. Customers purchase “slots” in which test scripts can be run, which are priced by the frequency a test will be run, and the number of devices that will be used (1 or 2). Each slot is associated with one location.
  • Script building fee. Customers may either build their own scripts, or have Mobile Complete build scripts for them. Users building their own scripts are charged an hourly fee for usage of the devices ($35/hour). Mobile Complete will build scripts at a rate of $200/hour.

.: Are any discounts available?

Discounts may be available based on the volume of tests and the length of the contract. Please contact support@deviceanywhere.com for details.

.: What if I don’t know which devices or markets I want to test on yet?

You do not need to specify the specific markets or devices when you purchase a slot. You should have an idea of what types of tests you want to do, at what frequency (e.g. I want to test these 5 websites, every hour, across 2 markets), so that you know how many slots you will need. Your sales associate can help you define a program that fits your needs.

.: What is the minimum time commitment for DeviceAnywhere Monitoring?

The minimum commitment is 6 months.

.: What happens if I want to change a script before the 6 months is up?

You may change (edit) a script at any time. You may also stop one script from running in a slot, and start a different script running in that slot. There is no limit on the number of script adjustments or switches that you can make. Note that each time you edit a script, it must be approved before it can be scheduled to run on the production environment.

.: Instead of using the shared handsets available, I’d like to use a dedicated handset. What is the pricing for this option?

Dedicated handset prices can be very reasonable when spread across multiple months. Please contact support@deviceanywhere.com for details.

Game development

You are a mobile game developer in India and want to penetrate the US mobile entertainment market. More specifically, you want to develop and test games for the US CDMA networks before the Christmas season. You have three options:

(1) Incur huge travel expenses by actually flying to the US to do in-market on-device testing (expensive),
(2) Engage a third-party consulting company to do the in-market testing for you (expensive), or
(3) Use DeviceAnyhwere to conduct all your testing in-network, on real handsets, from the convenience of your India office - Now that's cost-effective!

Content development

You are a content developer in the UK, and have just signed a contract with the largest GSM carrier in the US. While this contract is great business for you, it does require you to ensure that the carrier's branding is well-preserved in your content, and that your content is compatible with at least 80% of the commercially available devices in this carrier's network.

Since you are physically limited to network coverage in the UK, getting to the US carrier's network means you have to allocate a significant field testing budget.

DeviceAnywhere comes to your rescue - you can conduct all your field tests remotely, thereby minimizing your field validation costs, easing compliance with your contractual obligations, and guaranteeing a high-quality experience for your end customers.

Market intelligence gathering

You are a mobile content/game developer outside the US. Your products are deployed on US networks, but since you are physically out of network, you cannot see for yourself what your end-users experience with your products. Moreover, you have difficulty monitoring the US market: Which items are hot? What is selling more? What have your competitors recently launched? What is the deck placement of your assets compared to your competitors?

With DeviceAnywhere, you no longer have to wonder about these things. You can connect to live handsets in your target markets, assess your users' experience, gather market intelligence about what is currently hot - what is not, and evaluate how carrier deck placement is affecting your business.

Pricing includes two elements: access to groups of devices, called 'Packages', and usage of the devices, through purchase of “Credits” (1 credit = 1 hour), which can be used across all of the Packages. See the tables below for available options and fees for device access “Packages”, and usage “Credit Levels”.

Pricing FAQ

.: What is a “Package”?

A “Package” is a set of handsets grouped together based on the network to which the handsets apply. For example, all devices live on the Verizon network are grouped into the ‘Verizon’ package; all devices live on the Cingular network are grouped into the ‘Cingular’ package; etc. Customers may subscribe to one or more packages.

Click here for a list of available packages and handsets.

.: What are “Device Credits”?

Device Credits translate to usage time on handsets in the DeviceAnywhere system. You may use device credits across all handsets and packages that you have subscribed to. One credit = 1 hour, with the exception of certain partner promotions that may have specially negotiated rates.

Your monthly invoice will provide a detailed breakdown of your device credit usage with “by-package” detail. Only the time you actually engage a device is counted against your Device Credits, accrued in 6 minute increments (or 1/10th of a credit). Note that you must release acquired devices to stop credit accrual; otherwise the system will automatically release the device after 30 minutes of inactivity.

.: Do I need to sign up for credits in advance?

You do not need to sign up for credits in advance; a purchase of at least 1 package includes 10 credits that can be used against the packages purchased. However, signing up for credits in advance provides the advantage of lower rates. The above pricing table contains the price per credit at each level. You may of course use devices for any number of hours beyond your prepaid credits; additional usage rates are listed in the pricing table above, in the “additional post-paid usage” column.

Signing up for multiple months in advance also yields greater discounts: please contact your sales representative for details, or send an email to DASales@mobilecomplete.com.

.: What happens if I sign up in the middle of the month?

Our billing cycles run along calendar months, i.e. from the first of the month to the end of the month. When you subscribe to packages in the middle of a given month, we prorate the package subscription fees for that first month based on the number of days remaining until the end of the month.

.: Can I change Package subscriptions or Credit Levels?

You may add packages at any time; the appropriate prorated subscription cost will apply for the first month for all newly added packages.  You may cancel a package subscription at any time; however, the cancellation will go into effect from the beginning of the next month, i.e. no credit will be issued for unused package subscriptions. You may switch credit levels only at the beginning of each month. If you have pre-paid for multiple months, you may not lower the credit level for the length of the pre-paid subscription.

.: What happens to unused monthly credits?

Device credits do not roll-over across calendar month boundaries; your monthly credits will expire at the end of each month.

.: Are there any other charges associated with the system? Is airtime billed?

Our handsets are equipped with unlimited data service plans, and airtime is not charged.  However, any premium service charges you incur while using the handsets, e.g. due to downloading a non-free game or ring-tone, will be passed through to you.

.: Can my subscription be used by other employees of my company?

Yes. An unlimited number of user accounts may be created; there is no limit on users or simultaneous usage.
